2015-2025. A Decade of Growth: The Cape Breton Food Hub Story
-
2014-2015
The Beginning After years of community discussion, the Cape Breton Food Hub Co-op is officially incorporated. In July 2015, we launched a two-year pilot project to test a new model for local food distribution across the island.
-
2016
The Model is a Success Our pilot project proves to be a resounding success, demonstrating the viability and importance of the Food Hub. Sales double from our first year, and we are officially recognized as a "Good Food Organization" by Community Food Centres of Canada.
-
2019
A Year of Tremendous Growth Focusing on strategic growth, we develop a marketing strategy, hire more staff, and begin offering home delivery in the Sydney area. Our revenue grows to over $276,000 as we continue to build a strong foundation for the future.
-
2021
A Place to Call Home A landmark year! We completed renovations on our permanent facility in Bras d’Or, opening a retail store and a commercial kitchen. We also begin creating our own value-added product lines and purchase key vegetable processing equipment.
-
2023
Enhancing Our Services We take control of our own distribution by purchasing our first delivery van. Secured major funding to stabilize operations and expand our "Share the Harvest" program, providing fresh, local food to those in need. We also officially opened our Retail Store in December 2023.
-
2024
Record-Breaking Impact A year of unprecedented growth and achievement. We process over 8,000 pounds of local vegetables, create 14 jobs, and expand our distribution network. In the fall, we hit our highest online order numbers since the pandemic, and by December, our retail store achieves a record-breaking $174,236 in monthly sales. Our total sales for the year reach over $860,000.
-
2025 & Beyond
The Future is Local With a new strategic plan in development, we look forward to expanding our impact. Our plans include adding a second delivery van, increasing our retail hours, and growing our gleaning program to rescue even more food. We now service 11 communities in the Island with our 60+ producer members. The journey continues!
